Isla Santa Cruz is the most populated of the Galapagos islands, mainly because it has the main airport with two flights every day to and from the mainland, which was first established as an US military base during World War II.

The biggest town is Puerto Ayora and about 12,000 people live there. Many Ecuadorians have been attracted to the island because it has a relatively high standard of living - although prices are high compared to the mainland - and Santa Cruz is also the main center for tourism and scientific investigation in the Galapagos.

There are also towns and villages as well as a number of "fincas" or ranches in the highlands at Bellavista and Santa Rosa.
