The main town, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, is also the capital of the Galapagos province, and about 5,400 people live here. Many are involved in government and in the fishing industry.

Tourism is quieter here, though there are places to stay and the airport just outside the town has flights to Santa Cruz and Isabela as well as two flights a week to the mainland of Ecuador.

There is also a settlement at Progreso in the highlands.
