Current situation in the Galápagos
Many South American nations have substantial external debt commitments,
and public expenditure is limited by that as well as by developing nation
status. The Galápagos islands belong to Ecuador and are that country's
responsibility, but they are also of key interest to the richer countries
of the world because of their unique situation and ecosystems.
In
terms of educational practice in the province, the Liceo Naval de
Galápagos reports that:
- serious limitations exist in the infrastructure of the educational
institutions, and they lack resources or suitable means for the instructive
and formative work of the students
- learning outcomes are below national and international averages
- current practice does not aim to develop students as leaders in a
modern society that can deal with issues of globalization
- environmental education is showing positive developments, but is
over-reliant on generalizations and needs to be oriented more to specific
knowledge
- 76% of educational institutions do not guarantee to provide environmental
science within their curriculum
- 36% of institutions report that they do teach environmental awareness
- 80% of institutions consider the development of environmental education
of fundamental importance
- 8% teach it as a specific subject.
