| Isabela is the largest of the Galapagos
Islands, with over half the total land area of the group. The island
has been made from six huge volcanoes, connected by miles of lava
which is very difficult to travel over and impossible to farm.

This is probably why Isabela has remained relatively
sparsely populated, and has a bit of a "Wild West" feel
to it. However, it is still home to about 1,000 people. Most of
the families are involved in the fishing industry.
As well as the main town and port, Puerto Villamil,
there is a small agricultural settlement at Santo Tomas on the side
of the Sierra Negra Volcano.
