blue-footed booby divingBlue-footed boobies have specially designed shock absorbers in their bills, so that they can dive for fish in very shallow waters. Click on the small picture to enlarge it - can you see the blue feet?

Male frigate bird soaringFrigatebirds cannot dive as their feathers are not waterproof; instead they fly through the air stealing prey from other birds, or they fly low over the water and scoop up surface fish.

Waved Albatross in flightThe waved albatross, our symbol, is endemic to Española in the Galapagos Islands (meaning that is the only place where it breeds). Between March and December of each year about 10,000 pairs of these beautiful birds return to the same place to rejoin their mates and raise their young.

Lava gullThe lava gull is one of the rarest birds in the world - only 400 pairs are thought to exist, and they all live in the Galapagos islands. Even so, you are quite likely to see several - they inhabit the shorelines, where visitors go and people live.
